Political Agreement between the European Commission and local government associations

On January 28, the main global and regional local government associations signed a Political Strategic Alliance Agreement with the European Commission on development cooperation. The local and regional government networks who are signatories to the agreement have made a commitment to carry out actions based on common values and objectives to tackle global poverty and inequality and promote democracy and sustainable development. The signing of this agreement recognises the key role of municipalities, towns, cities and regions in political decision making and in defining policies to approach global challenges, as well as implementing global agendas shared at a local level.

This agreement represents a challenges for all the organisations involved (AIMF, CLGF, CEMR-PLATFORMA, UCLG and UCLG Africa), but also a collective challenge to seek out synergies among all the organisations through local and regional government collaboration, with the aim of boosting their capacities.
