European Year for Development 2015

The year 2015 has been designated the European Year for Development by the European Parliament, providing an opportunity to demonstrate the European Union’s commitment to eradicating poverty and report on community funding for development cooperation. Various high-level events are to be held over this period, whose conclusions will be key to the planet’s sustainable future, such as adopting the new sustainable development agenda and the Paris Climate Change Conference.

One of these events, held last December in Rome (Italy), was the working meeting of ‘Citizens in Europe, Citizens in the World’, organised in the context of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), which stressed the need to develop a new narrative for decentralised cooperation, focussing on citizens’ participation and fostering local governance.
