UCLG World Council in Haikou

The United Cities and Local Governments World Council was held in Haikou (China) from 23 to 26 November, with the participation of the Committee on Decentralisation and Local Self-Government (UCLG). As well as adopting the reports of the Rabat World Council and the Liverpool Executive Bureau, the new make-up of the Financial Management Committee was approved and the working plan for 2015 agreed on.

The UCLG Secretary-General, Josep Roig, presented the Committee on Statutory Affairs with a report on the organisation’s activities from 2011-2014 and the priorities for the forthcoming years. In this context, Mr Roig’s mandate as Secretary-General, which ended in 2014, was renewed until 2017, with a clear commitment to building a more resilient organisation, one that is capable of anticipating disruption, adapting to new contexts and creating lasting value.

At the meeting, new European Commission partnerships with the local world were also presented, in particular, the strategic agreement with UCLG and the CEMR through the PLATFORMA initiative. Finally, various committees and working groups held meetings and a number of round tables were organised on providing services, innovation in governance and access to water.
