Third Agora of Cities in Barcelona

On 10 March, the third Agora of the Cities, a space in which mayors, elected officials, civil society and those in the private sector related to city management can meet and exchange ideas, was held in Barcelona, with the aim of promoting debate and exchange of knowledge on local governability in order to face global challenges. The event was organised by Barcelona Provincial Council and GOBERNA América Latina and opened by the Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias; the Chairman of Barcelona Provincial Council, Salvador Esteve; and the President of the Ortega-Marañón Foundation, José Varela Ortega.

This year’s edition, under the title ‘The 21st century, century of the cities’, generated a shared reflection on two aspects of local politics likely to gain increasing relevance: the role of local government in world governance and the construction of local public policies on international relations.

One of the three round tables, entitled ‘City networks in local international impact’ was chaired by Josep Roig, Secretary-General of United Cities and Local Governments, and discussed the role of city networks as a global action tool for the local sphere.
